"There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace." - Kofi Annan , Former Secretary-General- UN (1997-2006).
Children are our future. This statement assumes special significance in India where 1/3rd of our population of 1.27 billion are children. Every child, when offered an enabling environment and the right guidance has the potential to blossom into a confident, contributing citizen of the country. The family or the demographics that he or she is born into should not determine his or her destiny.
Our Commitment to Protection of Child Rights
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child , endorsed by India in 1992, decrees the basic human rights that children irrespective of their nationality, demographics, religion must enjoy . They are:
- Right to Survival - Life, Health, Nutrition, Identity and Shelter.
- Right to Develop to the Fullest - Access to Education, Care, Recreation and Leisure.
- Right to Protection - From Neglect, Abuse and Exploitation
- Right to Participate - Live a Fulfilled Family, Have a Cultural and Social Life.
The unprecedented acceptance of the ‘Convention on Rights of the Child’ has radically changed the manner in which children are treated – not as passive entities but as human beings with a distinct set of rights.
At Pratheksha, we interpret and administer these Rights by ensuring that Every Child is meted with Equal Opportunity to Live, Express, Learn and Participate; Free of Want , Discrimination and Fear.
